How to Reduce Inflammation Caused by Rosacea

Rosacea is a facial skin condition that causes redness, swelling, visible blood vessels, and sometimes you may even have red bumps that appear like pimples. These red bumps are sometimes painful and can make your skin feel very irritated. Rosacea can occur for different reasons and can affect both men and women alike. In women, they may appear due to hormonal changes. Other things that can be causing rosacea flare-ups include stress, anxiety, drinking hot beverages, eating spicy foods, drinking alcohol, exercising or sweating, sun exposure, heat, or wearing makeup. To help reduce the inflammation that rosacea causes, there are a few things you can do. Read on for helpful tips.

Apply a Cool Compress

When you begin to feel a flare-up, you may notice your face feeling hot to the touch, or you may feel irritation on your skin. When you feel this way, you can apply a cool compress to your face to help reduce this feeling and to reduce the inflammation that may begin to occur afterward. Use a washcloth, soak it in cool water and apply it to the face, leaving it in place until your face no longer feels hot. Re-wet the washcloth if need be to cool it again.

Figure Out the Trigger

If you feel these flare-ups only at certain times, you should try to narrow down whatever is triggering the flare-ups and try to avoid whatever may have caused it. If you drink wine for instance, and you notice a flare-up in the days following, it could have been caused by the wine. If you notice flare-ups instantly after eating spicy foods, then stop eating spicy foods. Try to narrow down what is triggering the reaction and avoid the trigger if you can. If it's your makeup, then switch to something that is made for sensitive skin or that is hypoallergenic — or you could skip wearing makeup altogether.

Visit the Dermatologist

A visit to the dermatologist can help your figure out what is causing your rosacea and how to treat it. The dermatologist can offer medical treatments that may be necessary to reduce inflammation and to help clear up your skin.

If you suffer from rosacea, you know that the redness, bumps, and inflammation can make you feel self-conscious. Stop living with this condition and start doing something about it. Talk to your dermatologist about other treatment options for your rosacea.
